Over recent years, OGS inserted Communication and Dissemination among its main activities. This is due to the necessity of maintaining a dialogue with society and citizens, aimed at consolidating the public opinion on the Institute identity and on its specific competence that may be of help to the society. It is duty of the researchers (as explained by the European Charter for Researchers and Code of Conduct) to communicate the work to the public at large, favouring a better knowledge of the value of the science also with social-economic aims, supporting at the same time the scientific vocation of young people. We consider strategic to have communication/training events for the youngest, starting from the primary school scholars.
The Institution organised and participated in various public events at local, national and international level.
OGS organised various events for the schools: in particular, we recall the activities addressed to the teaching staff that represent a training event as well as scientific culture communication.
OGS performs a capillary action of communication with the media on the entire national territory, based on the basic principles of a fair journalism (appropiateness of news, refusal of the sensationalist emphasis, information scientific rigour) and acting with the binomials transparency + prompt presence in case of specific request of information and/or interviews. The management of the communication in the moment of crisis (May 2012 earthquake in Emilia) has been critical, and required an increased the presence of the OGS researchers involved in seismology and on the territory monitoring became necessary and wider than ever. A particular attention is constantly devoted to the website, that informs regarding the real-time seismic activity monitored by the OGS seismometric networks (http://rts.crs.inogs.it/), with a constantly increasing number of visits. In 2012 we started and experimental communication of earthquake localization also through a social network (Twitter).
What has already been implemented:
- More than 30 announcements on specific themes and printed on newspapers, agencies and web sites (more than 140 outcomes);
- Almost fifty interviews (radio and/or TV and on local and national newspapers).
